100% Mohair Cinches

In recent years there has been an increased awareness in saddle fitting. It is true that an ill fitting saddle can impair a horse's optimum performance, and even his usefulness as a saddle horse in later years. What many don't realize is that the cinch plays an equally important role. An inferior cinch constructed of hardware that rusts, buckles that shift, harsh cinch cords, or raised stitched tape, will cause a "cinchy" horse, and can result in hair loss, sores, scabs, and white spots in the girth area. For these reasons, we cannot stress enough the importance of using a quality custom cinch made from 100% Mohair, stainless steel cinch rings and buckles, and woven in D rings.

What is Mohair?

Mohair is the long, silky hair of the Angora goat. 100% Mohair cord is all natural hair.

What are the benefits of using 100% Mohair?

  • It is a natural fibre.
  • It is exceptionally soft, resilient, and durable.
  • It wicks sweat and moisture away.
  • It may be worn by sensitive horses that tend to chafe, or are allergic to synthetic or non-breathing materials commonly used for cinches today.
  • Your horse will like the smell of it.
  • It may be dyed with fabric dye.
  • It is an ideal material for making sturdy long lasting cinches provided it is kept free from dryed on sweat and grime.

To clean your 100% Mohair Cinch, we recommend handwashing in a mild detergent. Use the same water temperature for washing and rinsing to reduce or prevent shrinkage. Hang it and let it air dry. If there is any shrinkage after drying, your cinch will stretch back to the original length with use.

Latigo Keeper

These are 27 strand 100% Mohair cinches and can be made with or without a latigo keeper.

It is extremely important to use the right length cinch for your horse. To get the correct measurement, measure from a point approximately 3 inches back and 3 inches up from your horses elbow on the near side, under the girth to a point 3 inches back and 3 inches up on the off side. This will give you the measurement you need for your horses utmost comfort and willingness to perform. When you receive your 100% Mohair Cinch, it will measure approximately one inch shorter than what you ordered. This is to compensate for the natural stretch of the Mohair as you tighten your cinch.
